Sick Child Care

It is very difficult for a parent to see their child suffer from a disease, even if it is a mild one. Parents are often overwhelmed by the feeling of helplessness. Besides, most parents also feel reluctant to wake up the pediatric in the middle of the night. While going to a doctor is essential, the following are some tips that parents should follow so that the situation does not worsen.
- A child with fever, diarrhea, vomiting or contagious diseases like chickenpox, should not be allowed to go to school. He/she should be kept at home to prevent further spread of the disease. Siblings should also be kept away from the infected child as they are more vulnerable to getting infected.
- If both the parents are working, a relative or friend can be asked to take care of the sick child. Doctors recommend it, as a loving face and familiar surroundings are very comforting and help in early recovery.
- Try playing doctor-doctor with your child. They love to play that game. .You can provide them with dolls for patients and empty bottles as medicines.
- Giving medicines to the sick child is a very tough job. Try using innovative ways to get them to consume the medicine without letting them realize it.
- Give the child proper and healthy food to eat. It is very important to co-ordinate the time of taking medicines and meals. Some medicines are to be take pre-meals where as some are post-meals. Be sure that you are giving the medicines in a timely manner.
- A first aid kit should be kept handy and should be easily reachable. A bell should be given to the child so that he can ring it incase he needs you.
- Read a story or play your child's favorite music. It is better than television and helps in making the child feel relaxed.
- Have a medical encyclopedia as well as a supply of over the counter medicines handy.
- Give the child supplementary food such as juices or fruits as recommended by the doctor. They are not only healthy, but also refreshing.
- A surprise of helium balloons for your child at home along with a "Get Well Soon" card can do wonders. It makes the child feel better ensures faster recovery.
- Moreover, create positive energy around the child. Ask him/her to write to friends and grandparents about recovery. This is a self-motivating tool that promotes early recovery in kids.
